Cat’s Cradle

the stars fell to earth that night
in savage scimitar arcs
Orion dropped his bow
and she caught it up,
an infant Sekhmet wrapped in pink blankets.

i gave birth to a Goddess
she spoke a barbarian tongue
all purrs and roars

and how her father bent to her will
he curled round her finger just like a ring
he did not see the claws growing there
or her hypodermic fangs erupting, either.
she sang a barbarian’s song
a siren’s enchantment
and devoured him at once
heart and all.

she grew feral on the edge of the village
a hunnish smile playing at her lips
and a dagger at her hip
she comes to the border in the wilderness
and counts the offerings left her there
laughing sphinx of the wood…
she has a barbarian tongue.

jungle born, my Olmec girl
pale as an orchid
with a galaxy of freckles
scattered like gold dust across her nose
and a Humming-bird gene
a Butterfly Queen
(how my Olmec child has grown)
primeval goddess, my Dragonfly-girl
mischievous fairy with flames for her hair
and a voice like the rain stick
in a shaman’s hands
my tropical priestess of mercy
soothing breeze tinged with salt
her eyes blazing greener than iguana hide
an iridescent gem, iridescent skin
(how my Olmec daughter’s grown)
she drifts like a spark on the air
and as sparks will do
she ignites a pure flame
my forest fire,
my dancing Kali
my Olmec girl dancing in the sun.

some smooth stones
lay pave’ in platinum
this ring has birthed hoorors
it shines like the stars
Hidalgo, spanish bastard,
choke on it, choke on it;
it’s only carbon anyway.

what weeds do you offer me now?
exotic vegetation?
a panama rose wilting in a paper cone,
the rainforest’s been cleared, now.
it smells of insecticide and infidelity.
leave it, leave it;
who needs such devotion?

a compact formed of bakelite,
it houses heaven
blue pigments have dyed
some sweat shop worker’s hands
and it’s stamped with a name
so transitory it blurs with every touch.
what does it ultimately mean?
afghanistan lapis and kohl
borrowed infamy in a rainbow assortment
destroy it, destroy it;
someone’s bought the sky.
